Benefits of Live-in Care

Most of us will choose to continue living in our own home for as long as we possibly can. The idea of having to move into a care home is frightening and upsetting for a lot of people. Live-in care allows vulnerable people to continue living in their own home with the reassurance and peace or mind that they are safe and well looked after.

A good live-in carer will ensure that you receive dedicated one-to-one care, appropriate to you. They will make sure they understand your preferences, likes, dislikes and routines. They will get to know you and how best to keep you happy and content. Being in the familiarity of your own home will allow you to keep the things which are important to you close to hand with the reassurance that a trusted individual is there for guidance, reassurance or to help in an emergency.

You can keep your pets as a live-in carer will help to look after them too. You will not have to worry about when to take medication or prepare healthy meals as a live-in carer can take care of that. Your family and friends will feel more at ease knowing you are being well looked after and that you are safe. Live-in care is nearly always cheaper than living in a nursing home or residential care home and is far more likely to make you feel independent and safe.

More cost-effective than a care home
The majority of expense to stay in a care home is to cover the accommodation costs. All of the cost of live-in home care is for one-to-one person-centred care and support when you need it.

One-to-one care always on hand day and night
Our around-the-clock home care services ensure you are safe 24/7. A CareCompanion™ will be living in your home and will be there to look after you all through the day. At night they will also respond to any incidents should you need them to help you.

Specialist expertise in medical and complex care issues
We have a wealth of experience in complex care and apply the same high standards whatever the requirements of the client may be. We have arranged successful packages for people with learning difficulties, multiple sclerosis, dementia and severe disabilities.

Regulated by Care Quality Commission
We are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and always follow their high standards. We are also members of the Home Care Association, the UK’s membership body for homecare providers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does 24/7 live-in home care work?

24/7 live-in home care is provided by an experienced carer who will live in your home and help in whatever way has been agreed. The carer may stay with you for a few days or a few weeks depending on the care package and then another carer will replace them for a similar time period.

What duties and responsibilities does a live-in home carer carry out?

Our live-in home carers (CareCompanions™) will follow an agreed plan which may involve help with everyday tasks or more complicated care. Their responsibility will be to follow that plan. They will also be companions, someone familiar and available for you to talk to, whether that is about day-to-day things, the latest news, reminiscing about the past, discussing films and books, or even going through family history. They will share the day-to-day tasks and activities that friends would regularly do together.

I require complex/personal care at home. Are your live-in home carers able to provide specialist 24/7 care?

Yes, we provide care to match your needs whether it be for personal care, dementia care, or convalescence/respite care. Our suitably qualified CareCompanions™ are trained to meet your specific requirements.

How will my live-in home carer be chosen and can I meet them before?

We will carefully select appropriate CareCompanions™ and introduce them to you to make sure you are well-suited before commencing a care package. You will have a chance to discuss your needs with your prospective carer and decide whether they are the right fit for you.

How much does around-the-clock care at home cost per month?

The amount will vary depending on the level and expertise of care required. As every individual is different, please contact us with your requirements and we will give you a quote.

Do I need to have a spare bedroom for my 24/7 carer? What else do I need to provide?

A 24/7 carer will need a bedroom with a bed, bed linen, wardrobe and chest of drawers to store their belongings while they are staying with you. Access to the internet is ideal in this modern world and meals where relevant. This will all be agreed with you beforehand.

What if I don’t get on with my live-in home carer?

We carefully select 24/7 live-in carers who we think will be best suited to our clients but if for any reason you do not feel this to be the case then we will of course endeavour to find another CareCompanion™.

What happens if my care needs to change?

We will always monitor your care needs as we work with you. If your care needs to change then we will change your care package accordingly regardless of whether you need more or less care.

I have a pet who lives with me, will my carer be able to help look after them too?

If you have any household pets it is important to us that they are taken care of too. A CareCompanion™ will be selected who is happy to work with any pets you might have.

Will my friends and family still be able to visit me when my carer is there?

Yes, of course. Your carer will be there when you need them but will be happy to give you time with your family and friends when you want it.

24/7 Live-In Home Care in the North East

Our bespoke 24/7 live-in care and other home care packages are available in a wide range of locations within the North East, such as Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Northumberland, and many other towns and remote areas within the North East region.

    What Is 24/7 Live-In Care?

There may be a time when your loved one is no longer able or willing to care for themselves and their home. When that happens, you and your loved one will be faced with the decision as to how best to handle the situation.

In the past, the options would be limited. You could try to keep them safe in their own home, you could have them move in with you or you with them, or they could be placed in a care home. While any of these may work, another popular option is live-in care, and it might be the best choice in your situation.

    What Does Live-In Care Involve?

Live-in care involves having a carer or a team of carers move into your loved one’s home. They can be there 24 hours a day 7 days a week to assist your loved one with whatever he or she may need from day to day. A live in carer may perform many different services. A few common ones are:

    • Personal care – this would include assistance with bathing, toileting, dressing, or grooming.
    • Medication management – the carer can monitor and administer prescription medications to make sure the client is following their doctor’s orders.
    • Companionship – the carer can keep the client company, engage in conversation, share a cup of tea, or play board games.
    • Doctors’ appointments – providing transportation to medical appointments and making sure that the client is on time.
    • Meal preparation and feeding – the carer can help to prepare meals, while ensuring that the client is receiving a healthy and nutritious diet. This will also help the client to maintain a healthy weight.
    • Housekeeping – carers can handle laundry, perform light housekeeping duties, or simply help with tidying up.
    • Exercise – it’s important to keep the body fit by engaging in regular physical activity. The carer can encourage your loved one to exercise regularly, perhaps by taking walks with them.
    • Safety supervision – the carer can assist the client by helping them with mobility support to keep them from slipping or falling.
    • Continence management
    • Help with getting in and out of bed
    • Caring for pets
    • Shopping and errands

Benefits of 24/7 Live-In Care vs Care Homes

    • Live-in care allows your loved one to stay in their home where they’re familiar and comfortable as opposed to living in a care home.
    • It allows them to keep any pets they may have.
    • Live-in care is very personalised since it’s a one on one relationship. Your loved one won’t be competing with other clients for attention. This enables your loved one to build a trusting relationship with the carer.
    • As one ages, they are at risk for falls. In the UK, one in three people aged 65 or older experience a fall every year, and some of those falls leave permanent and serious damage. A live-in carer can assist with mobility to prevent falls, and should a fall occur, the carer will be there to provide immediate assistance.
    • Live-in care can provide close companionship for your loved one.
    • Live in care allows one to stay in their home and maintain normal social relationships with neighbours, friends, and family. If your loved one is placed in a residential care facility, the likelihood that these friends and neighbours would visit is greatly reduced.
    • Live-in care is more cost effective than residential care facilities. With a residential facility, a large portion of the cost is for the accommodations.

How to Choose a Live-In Care Provider

Here are a few suggestions for you when selecting a live-in care provider:

    • Understand your needs – the first step in finding the right provider is to assess the needs of your loved one. They may merely need help with day to day life, or they may need something more involved that would require a more specialised care team.
    • Do research – take advantage of the internet to find agencies or private live-in care providers. Your family’s general practitioner may be able to offer some assistance in this area as well.
    • Involve your loved one – let them have input into the selection process.
    • Review the provider’s credentials and reviews – other clients experiences can help you trim down the selections.
    • Interview the care providers – if this is going to be a long-range relationship, it’s best to test the compatibility of the carers with your loved one.
    • Ask about training – find out exactly how the care providers are trained and if that training is pertinent to the needs of your loved one.

An in-home health care service might be the perfect solution to give your loved one their desired level of support, particularly if you’ve got the best people for it. If you take the time to find the right fit, your loved one can be well protected and cared for, and you’ll be confident in the knowledge that you’ve made the right choice. After all, the right amount of care and support can go a long way for you and your loved ones.
