Benefits of Personal Care Services

As we get older, we often notice things that used to be easy can seem more difficult and we start to recognise that we would benefit from assistance with daily tasks.

Personal home care can do just that, allowing individuals to continue living in their own home with the reassurance and peace or mind that they have someone who can help where you need it whether that be household maintenance or assistance with medication, bathing and visits to the toilet.

More cost-effective than a care home
The majority of expense to stay in a care home is to cover the accommodation costs. All of the cost of personal care at home is for one-to-one person-centred care and support when you need it.

One-to-one care always on hand day and night
Our personal home care services ensure you or your loved one are safe for as much time as you need us. We can offer a full 24/7 personal home care service or a service for shorter periods, depending upon your requirements.

Specialist expertise in medical and complex care issues
We have a wealth of experience in complex care and apply the same high standards whatever the requirements of the client may be. We have arranged successful packages for people with learning difficulties, multiple sclerosis, dementia and severe disabilities.

Regulated by Care Quality Commission
We are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and always follow their high standards. We are also members of the Home Care Association, the UK’s membership body for homecare providers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does personal home care work?

Our personal home care service is provided on a daily or nightly basis for the periods of the day that you or your loved one requires us. You will have a small team of usually two or three CareCompanions™ who will provide the care on different days.

What duties and responsibilities does a CareCompanion™ carry out?

Our personal home carers (CareCompanions™) will follow an agreed plan which may involve help with everyday tasks or more complicated care. The tasks will be agreed upon with you in advance. They will also be companions, someone familiar and available for you to talk to, whether that is about day-to-day things, the latest news, reminiscing about the past, discussing films and books, or even going through family history. They will share the day-to-day tasks and activities that friends would regularly do together.

I require complex/personal care at home. Are your CareCompanions™ able to provide specialist 24/7 care?

Yes, we provide care to match your needs whether it be for personal care, dementia care, or convalescence/respite care. Our suitably qualified CareCompanions™ are trained to meet your specific requirements.

How will my personal home carer be chosen and can I meet them before?

We will carefully select an appropriate personal home carer and introduce them to you to make sure you are well-suited before commencing a care package. You will have a chance to discuss your needs with your prospective CareCompanion™ and decide whether they are the right fit for you.

How much does personal home care cost per month?

The amount will vary depending on the level and expertise of care required. As every individual is different, please contact us with your requirements and we will give you a quote.

Do I need to provide anything for my CareCompanion™?

Access to the internet is ideal in this modern world and meals where relevant. This will all be agreed with you beforehand.

What if I don’t get on with my CareCompanion™?

We carefully select personal carers who we think will be best suited to our clients but if for any reason you do not feel this to be the case then we will of course endeavour to find another CareCompanion™.

What happens if my care needs to change?

We will always monitor your care needs as we work with you. If your care needs to change, then we will change your care package accordingly regardless of whether you need more or less care.

I have a pet who lives with me, will my CareCompanion™ be able to help look after them too?

If you have any household pets it is important to us that they are taken care of too. A CareCompanion™ will be selected who is happy to work with any pets you might have.

Will my friends and family still be able to visit me when my carer is there?

Yes, of course. Your carer will be there when you need them but will be happy to give you time with your family and friends if you want it.

Learn About Personal Care at Home Services

Everyone deserves to live a full and independent life, regardless of their age or ability. As one gets older, they may find that they are having difficulty performing routine tasks around the house. If you or a loved one is experiencing this, it may help to consider employing a personal care provider.

    What is Personal Care?

Personal care can mean anything done for you that’s of a personal nature. This could include such things as personal hygiene-bathing, showering, shaving, oral hygiene, or hair and nail care. It can also include continence management, assistance with toileting, wound, catheter, or stoma care, laundry, or bed changing. Personal care is for older people that need assistance of a general nature, as opposed to those who may need specific medical care.

What Services Are Included in Personal Care?

    • Personal hygiene – this is one of the most important aspects of personal care, as good hygiene is important to maintaining a healthy life.
    • Mobility – as one ages, they are at risk for falls. In the UK, one in three people aged 65 or older experience a fall every year, and some of those falls leave permanent and serious damage. A personal carer can assist with mobility to prevent falls, and should a fall occur, the carer will be there to provide immediate assistance.
    • Laundry – a personal carer can help with laundry and can make sure that their care recipient is dressed in clean clothes.
    • Changing bed linen – washing and changing bed linen is often a struggle for older adults. The personal carer can perform this task alone, or simply assist. Making a bed is always easier when two people are doing it.
    • Meal planning and preparation – a personal carer can perform this task and can offer nutritional advice to ensure that the older adult is eating a proper diet.
    • Errands or shopping – offering assistance with grocery orders, shopping for clothes or other essentials.
    • Doctor’s appointments – the carer can keep track of appointments and may provide transportation to and from.
    • Pet care – a personal carer can assist with caring for pets-feeding them, cleaning up after, or walking them.
    • Companionship – older adults sometimes just need someone to be there. A carer can provide companionship and someone to talk to, take a walk with, or one to share a cup of tea.

Benefits of Personal Care At Home

    • Familiar surroundings – as one gets older, routine tasks can be difficult to complete. Rather than move into an assisted care residential facility, personal care can allow the individual to remain in their home. This allows them to stay in familiar surroundings with their possessions, their neighbours, and their memories.
    • Independence – personal care allows the recipient to maintain a sense of independence. This is important as it can greatly reduce stress or depression in older adults.
    • Safer care – one of the challenges of helping older adults with hygiene tasks is safely providing help. Carers who specialise in personal care are trained in techniques to help their charges safely with daily hygiene.
    • Expert care – an experienced carer will know how to adapt their approach based on the individual’s ability to do specific tasks. They can identify which tasks give the individual difficulty, so that they don’t have to be told in what areas they need help.
    • Less embarrassment – most people would prefer private hygiene, but older adults can lack this luxury. Personal care providers know how to allow the individual to maintain a sense of dignity when they need help in this area. Most older adults would be more embarrassed if these duties were performed by a friend or family member.
    • Better health – older adults can sometimes develop serious health problems when they are too embarrassed to ask for help. Urinary tract and other infections can have serious health complications if not dealt with properly. A professional carer will know best how to do that.

How to Find a Personal Care Provider

Here are a few suggestions for you when selecting a personal care provider:

    • Understand your needs – the first step in finding the right provider is to assess the needs of your loved one.
    • Do research – take advantage of the internet to find agencies or private personal care providers. Your family’s general practitioner may be able to offer some assistance in this area as well.
    • Involve your loved one – let them have input into the selection process.
    • Review the provider’s credentials and reviews – other clients’ experiences can help you trim down the selections.
    • Interview the care providers – if this is going to be a long-range relationship, it’s best to test the compatibility of the carers with your loved one.
    • Ask about training – find out exactly how the care providers are trained and if that training is pertinent to the needs of your loved one.

A personal care service might be the perfect solution to give your loved one their desired level of support, particularly if you’ve got the best people for it. If you take the time to find the right fit, your loved one can be well protected and cared for, and you’ll be confident in the knowledge that you’ve made the right choice.
